Location
海へと続く、坂の街
開港一五〇年余の時を刻む港町・神戸は、山手
からウォーターフロントまでを結ぶ「坂の街」で
もあります。なかでもハンター坂は、神戸北野を
代表するいくつもの名店が生まれた場所。
懐かしさを湛えつつ、歩くたびに新しい
表情を見せるレトロモダンな魅力があります。
坂の上の北野異人館街は、かつて、故国を離れた
外国人たちが海の見える高台に邸宅を構え、海の
向こうへと想いをはせた街。勾配が急である分、
振り返ったときに待つのは絶景です。
Kobe, from the hill district down to the waterfront, has a nostalgic yet retro-modern appeal. ‘Hunter-zaka’, hill street has many famous shops and restaurants, and nearby is the Ijinkan district where foreigners built mansions overlooking the sea.
北野地区
北野坂の西側にある、「ハンター坂」と呼ばれる
通りは、この坂の上にあるお屋敷に暮らしていた
実業家のＥ・Ｈ・ハンター氏に由来しています。
ハンター夫妻が晩年を過ごした邸宅は、ここ北野
の地で代々オーナーを迎え、非公開の「和の異人
館」として、常に、人の暮らしの温もりとともに
ありました。
‘Hunter-zaka’ hill street is named after Mr. E.H. Hunter, a businessman who built and lived in a Japanese ‘Ijinkan’ (foreigner house) at the top with his wife, Aiko.
Archtecture
「和の異人館」という邸宅
瀟洒な洋館が建ち並ぶ異人館街で、ハンター氏が
愛する妻のために築いたのは、美しい庭園のある
日本家屋建築でした。
縁側に面した和室は、ふた間続きという、日本の
伝統的な構成を採用。表玄関の出入口の高さなど
からも、ハンター氏が和のヒューマンスケールを
意識していたことがよく分かります。和を重んじ
そこに洋の要素を寄り添わせた建築。
その思いやりの心を今に受け継ぎ、新郎新婦と、
大切なゲストをお迎えする「和の異人館」。
それが、旧ハンター邸です。
Mr. Hunter built a Japanese-style house for his beloved wife. His great appreciation of Japanese aesthetics is incorporated with Western elements in the architectural design: Hunter Guest House maintains that inherent spirit to this day, welcoming the bride and groom, and their precious guests.
History
Ｅ・Ｈ・ハンター
1843年、アイルランド生まれ。22歳のときに
来日し、横浜港で出会った輸入商キルビーと共に、
1867年の兵庫開港に際し、大阪に移住します。
そこで薬問屋の娘・愛子と知り合い、結婚。
1874年に神戸でE・H・ハンター商会、
大阪で大阪鉄工所を設立し、次々と事業を成功さ
せたハンター氏は、地元有志より北野天満神社の
周辺の土地3000坪を譲り受け、広大な敷地に
日本家屋を建て、庭に植えた夫婦桜を眺めながら、
晩年を過ごしました。
Born in Ireland in 1843, Mr. Hunter came to Japan at the age of 22, first to Yokohama then to Osaka when the port of Hyogo opened in 1867. There, he met and married Aiko, the daughter of a drug wholesaler. In 1874, Mr. Hunter established E. H. Hunter & Co. in Kobe and Osaka Iron Works in Osaka. He acquired land around Kitano Tenman Shrine and built a vast Japanese house on the site. He and his wife spent their later years admiring the cherry blossoms planted in their garden.
